The Oval Office, Post RE4 Earth
November 23, 2005 1454 Zulu time (9:54am, local)
"...if there's nothing else, gentleman?" No one in the room responded as the President asked his question, prompting him to nod. "Then you're all dismissed.
"Except you, Agent Kennedy. I need you to remain behind for a moment."
All of the other men and women in the room gathered their papers and left, save for Leon. Even the President's staff, who never seemed to be more than a few feet from the man at any given moment were dismissed. This was a bit unusual, for Leon at least. Despite having saved the man's daughter, Leon was rarely granted this sort of audience with President Graham. Certainly the two had a good working relationship, one of a good deal of respect and trust, but Leon's main focus was to help protect the other members of the First Family, so he spent more time with them, particularly Ashley, than with the President himself. Hell, Leon was only invited there today to give a final run down of security measures for the President's Thanksgiving dinner, so he had to wonder what this was about.
When the President seated himself, Leon finally spoke up. "Yes sir?"
President Graham tapped his fingers to his lips for a moment, gathering his thoughts. "Leon... ever since you first came aboard, you've done a tremendous job protecting my family. You've gone above and beyond the call of duty time and time again. You should know I think very highly of you. The whole family does."
Leon smiled a bit at that. High Praise, indeed. "But...", the President continued, and Leon's face fell noticeably. "...it's come to my attention recently that your behavior has been... cause for concern.
"Look, you're one of the few decent people in this town, and I trust you with the life of my family. If you're in any kind of trouble, I can help you, but you have to tell me what's going on." The President looked Leon in the eyes. "Leon, is there anything I need to know?"
Leon was definitely taken aback by this. What was the President talking about. ".....no Sir."
President Graham sighed, and picked up a blue folder. He flipped it open and looked at it. "You've met with a known associate of Albert Wesker. You've pulled numerous classified documents pertaining to Umbrella Corporation over the last few months. You've recently requisitioned the cure for the T-Virus. You somehow managed to secure a sample of the Master Plaga, but you refuse to say where and how you got your hands on it. It's also been noted that several times already, you've reported for duty with multiple cuts, bruises, and scars received from undocumented incidents.
"Is any of this wrong?"
'...fuck!', Leon thought to himself. Everything about that was correct, and he knew it, but how could he explain it without going into detail about the nexus? "It's true, but it's not what it sounds like, Sir."
"Then what is it, Leon?"
Leon tried to figure a good way to explain things, but couldn't. He was going to have to stonewall. "It's a very personal matter, but it has not interfered with my duties to your family and to this country. I've done nothing to jeopardize any member of your family, or National Security, nor would I ever.
"...I just need to put some personal demons behind me."
The President seemed to take all of this in, thinking for a moment. "...Raccoon City?"
Leon winced, inwardly. Last thing he wanted to do was use the death of a small city to cover his ass. But it was true, to a degree. "Something like that, Sir."
So many people forget about Raccoon City, it's almost upsetting to Leon, at times. It's been 6 years, though. To the public at large, Racoon City, by now, is a national tragedy long since over. Many people, even the ones he worked with, forget that Leon was there, and even less know the lengths he had to goto to make it out alive.
The President, though, wasn't fully satisfied with Leon's answer. "Look, kid, I'm willing to give you alot of latitude, but you can't run around waging a personal war. Furthermore, the Senate Intelligence Oversight Subcommittee, ever since they found out that Krauser was the one who betrayed us and kidnapped Ashley..." There was a flash of emotion behind Leon's eyes at the mention of Krauser, but he otherwise remained calm, on the surface, at least. "...they've been keeping a much closer eye on people. With what they've brought me, I can't stop them from putting you under review, but I can give you a heads up.
"Monday morning, when you report for your briefing, you'll be informed that you've been relieved of your responsibilities for the time being. You'll then be escorted to Quantico to undergo a comprehensive physical, as well as a series of psychological exams. While that's happening, Federal Agents will be executing a search warrent on your apartment. If you have anything you need to hide, get rid of it before then.
"While under review, you'll be reassigned to Quantico, helping to oversee the ORE's, pending the review."
The President leaned forward in his seat and looked Leon square in the eyes. "I'm giving you a lot of rope here... make sure neither one of us ends up being hung with it.
