It was good to be able to spend Christmas with everyone, especially with Claire. It seemed neither one of them got to spend as much time with the other as they had wanted, but they managed. He was thankful for that. He honestly didn't know if he could have this kind of relationship with any other woman.

This had been one hell of a year for him. Looking back, he had accomplished a lot, and while he had to make some tough calls, he's still proud of everything he's done.

He didn't know what the new year would bring, but to say that he had learned to expect the unexpected was an understatement. Strangely, for the first time in a long time, he found himself looking forward to another year of craziness. Largely because he knew he'd have friends he could count on, when he needed them. And even more importantly, he'd have Claire, who'd be right there with him in the middle of all of it.

He knew right then he was losing hope. Some would call it being realistic, or being prepared. He wasn't prepared for this, any of this, and neither were they.

Once he managed to pick himself up off the floor of the sewer, he ejected the clip of his 9mm. He popped out four bullets, mentally assigning a name for each one. Sherry. Ada. Claire. Leon.

The four had survived so far, but it was largely on luck more than anything else. At this point, Leon was dragging himself around, lurching much like the zombies surrounding the place, with bloody bullet wound in his shoulder. He didn't know what could've happened to him while he was out cold. What could've crawled on him, or bit him in that sewer. He didn't even know how the others had fared.

He couldn't help but think, now, that if it came down to it... that if he had to... that if he had to tell them to...

He wasn't about to give up. He was still breathing, so things were far from over. But...

If they didn't get out of Raccoon alive, they weren't going to get out undead, either.

He wasn't sure why that one ring caught his eye. The diamond, while nice looking, wasn't terribly huge, and it was set in a simple gold band. It was by no means cheap looking, or low quality, he even thought it had a kind of simple, quiet beauty to it. But while there were much better looking ones in the window display, there was still something about that one that made him stop and take a closer look.

Finally, both his conscious and subconscious mind got on the same page as a thought clicked in his head.

That ring would be perfect for Claire.

It was odd, how one little ring, and how one simple thought, can carry so much weight.

He was surrounded by silence, a very uncomfortable and awkward silence. He knew that coming here was a mistake, it always was. But there was a part of him that hoped that this time would be different. As the silence lingered on, though, all he could think was that he'd rather be with Claire.

He'd settle for being anywhere but here. A strange thought, since "here" happened to be home.

No one seemed sure of what to say. The adults just gaped at him in muted surprise. The kids, to whom he was a virtual stranger, sat quietly confused by the grown up reactions to his presence.

Maybe he should've called first, told them that he'd be nearby in Philly on business. Maybe he should've taken off his tactical gear; guns and grenades at the table were bad manners. Maybe he should've made more noise when he first entered; he was so quiet that it was nearly a minute before they noticed him there. Perhaps they thought he was a ghost. Maybe he should've asked Claire to come; this would be easier with her here.

Maybe he shouldn't have come at all.
