If you love something, set it free...

He would always remember the first time she left to go look for Chris, it would be hard for him not to. The sight of Claire walking out of that door and out of his life was something far too painful to ever forget.
Sure, he knew why she was leaving. Chris was her brother, and her last living relative. She loved him dearly; he was very important to her. He understood all of that, which is why he never gave her any static about it. Inside, though, there was a part of him that didn't care, a part that wanted to scream at her What about me?!
After Raccoon City, he, Claire, Sherry... all of them had been so messed up by the experience that they practically clung to each other. As a support system, they all helped each other, and in all honesty, they needed each other, badly. They understood each others nightmares. They all had the same uncertainty about the future. They were all five seconds away from falling to pieces, and would've if the other two weren't there helping them to keep it together.
Still, after the first few weeks, Claire's need to go find Chris started to become this great white elephant in the room. Something they tried to ignore, but couldn't. Not that either himself or Sherry didn't want Claire to find Chris, quite the opposite, but they knew for her to find him, she would have to leave them.
And Leon let her go.
Part of him was terrified that he'd never see her again. After all, there was nothing holding them together except a common traumatic experience and a burning desire to see Umbrella pay for their crimes. There was nothing that would constantly pull them back together. But he let her go anyway.
He played the role of supportive best friend to perfection. He did all he could to help her track down leads. He never once made her feel guilty. He was always the one there with a hand on her shoulder telling her that it would be ok, that she would find Chris. And all the while, deep inside, he would want to say 'don't go. Stay with me! I need you. If you leave now, I'll fall apart without you. Please stay...'
He, of course, never said any of those words. Leon was a terrible liar, but he was very good at not telling pieces of the truth. Besides, even though it was tearing him up inside, he could see just how much it was hurting her too.
So, he let her go, and tried to make it as painless as possible for the both of them. Their goodbye was quick and quiet. No tears from him, just a hug, and that if she needed anything from him at all, to contact him. And yet, every second he did, he still wanted to beg her stay, to tell her how much he still needed her, but he wasn't that selfish. He needed her, but she needed Chris even more. In a way, that stung, but Leon was never the type to let darker emotions rule his actions and decisions. So after saying her goodbye to Sherry, Claire had left, and managed to tear out and take with her a much larger chunk of his heart than he would realize.

So... I started again. XD But now I have all these kickass weapons! :D
